When You Know You’re Still In The Game: Being Recognized Out of Costume

This recently happened to me about three times today, all by longtime acquaintances on cosplay. (Yes, I’m one of those “old fossils” out there who are old enough to have raised come the current crop of cosplayers out there.)

Hellos going out to Lynda (“Pawteegal”), who was chaperoning some of the younger folks here today, Shawny (“shwong”), who was with her own little one in tow, and to Ronnie (“Kimiko”) and her two daughters.

Porco Rosso will probably make a late afternoon/evening appearance, as long as it stays cool, and I psych myself up enough to get into it. It is a rather warm costume, warmer than Black Jack (Which, of course, was worn last night, and refreshed for a possible encore.)

Next up: An appearance to get pictures at a Gurenn Lagann gathering (4:30 pm approx.) and a Vocaloids gathering (5:15 pm approximate), and hopefully another round of food intake and perhaps a chance to catch my breath.

News Update – Outlaw Surgeon “Black Jack” Spotted Back At Fanime 2009

“We have received unconfirmed reports of sightings of someone matching the description of Kuroo Hazama, an unlicensed physician, age undetermined, who goes by the alias of “Black Jack,” sighted at various locations throughout the McEnery Convention Center and adjoining hotels in downtown San Jose. Sightings were reported between 6:20 PM PDT on Friday, May 22, and 1:50 AM PDT on Saturday, May 23.

The individual in question is around 5 feet, 9 inches tall, has black and white hair, and bears numerous stitches and scars, evidence of extensive skin grafting, most prominent on the face, which has two overlapping skin tones. He is dressed in black, in the style of a 19th century physician, sporting a burgundy/red bow tie, and wearing a long black trenchcoat.

Eyewitness reports have proclaimed that this individual has been spotted performing what are said to be ‘incredible’ surgical techniques, and those who have admitted to seeking his services portray him in a positive light. However, it is imperative to keep in mind that Black Jack is being sought after by law enforcement agencies and medical licensing boards in several countries for practicing medicine without a license.

If you see him, again, as we have previously stated, do not attempt to approach him on your own initiative, but rather, contact the nearest law enforcement agency.

Thank you for your cooperation.”

Welcome to Fanime Con 2009!

As the first day of Fanime 2009 gets underway, here’s the costumes that will be making a return for Raider3…

Black Jack (From the anime and manga by Osamu Tezuka) – Raider3′s signature costume

Porco Rosso – From Hayao Miyazaki’s animation film – A Fanime debut from years previous, and always a fan favorite.

Bean Bandit – One of the original Raider3 costume creations, from Kenichi Sonoda’s wild Chicago-based courier. (Watch for him in the Gunsmith Cats manga and the Riding Bean OAV.)

An optional fourth costume. (Read: Dark gray pin-stripe suit – House of the Dead quick ideas are being worked on)

Coverage will be hosted here, mirrored at the Network R3 hub, and photos are going to Network R3 Photos and Flickr. I’m working under a bit of a handicap, having rushed around and left my main camera at home. (And not wanting to run a nearly 3-hour round trip to get it.) At least I brought my camcorder. ^_^;

SF CBF 2009 Photos Update

Photos are still in the process of being uploaded to Flickr (There’s nearly 600 of them, and sometimes the uploader has issues with getting as many pictures as possible transferred. I’ve been doing multiple runs to take care of what didn’t make it across the previous times.)

A write up is still in the works, in between work and other errands. Migration of previous event galleries when happen when time permits. (Full-time work schedule, end of college and all that…)

San Francisco Cherry Blossom Festival Cosplay and Parade 2009

Photos are being uploaded to the Network R3 Photos site as well as my Flickr account. It was very hot (I think it was even hotter than 2004!), and there were a lot of great costumes. (Plus one crappy one, but that one was my fault. ^_^;) Anyway, there’s over 580 photos for your viewing pleasure.

This post will be updates with thumbnails, links, and a small write-up. Some of us had heat exhaustion, some of just got minor sunburn and dealt with lack of sleep.

There were six of us at the end of the night at Sanppo, including DJ Sandman and Ray Nagar – If you weren’t there, well… What can I tell you? Anyway, fun, hot costumes, hot weather overall, but another great year added San Francisco tradition – 11 years and running!

We have unconfirmed reports that a man by the name of Kuroo Hazama, a.k.a. “Black Jack,” an unlicensed surgeon, has been sighted in the area of San Jose, CA, around the area of the McEnery Convention Center downtown. This person is wanted in connection for multiple counts of practicing medicine without a license. If you see him, do not attempt to apprehend on your own intiative – Please contact the appropriate authorities.

(Costume #1 for Fanime 2008 set to debut around 2:30-2:45 through the evening…)

R3 and Red Skies @ Night Is “Go” For Fanime 2008!

We have one confirmed costume, three possibilities, and one inspired by an Oscar-winning movie actor from earlier this year, and some silliness from Victoria Erica of Traveling Valentine.

Costume List as of 2008.5.17 @ 1925 Pacific Daylight Time:
1. Black Jack (R3 Signature Cosplay)
2. Possibility A: Porco Rosso (Need to see how baggy is it, in light of weight loss – I hope it’s cooler next weekend!)
3. Possibility B: Bean Bandit (New muscle-tee shirt prepared for modification. Yes, I’m shorter than Bean. Deal with it. I hope there’s a Rally Vincent in the area.)
4. Possibility C: Gendou Ikari (Have the jacket, have an actual costume beard this time, need a pimp cane, and portable sound system to crank out “1999″ – “It’s Gendou!” ringtone equipped on my RAZR.)
5. Not-so-top-secret Project: Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood, complete with a Giant Straw that “reaches a-c-r-o-s-s the room… and starts to drink your milkshake. I… Drink… Your… Milkshake! (Slurrrp!) I DRINK IT UP!“)
(Costume order and total costumes subject to change. This is crunch time!)

For now, I’m working to finish up some projects for other folks.

Cherry Blossom Festival 2008 Recap

Well, a “new” costume of sorts debuted, worn by Patrick (Still needs some work, but it got some comments by Gilles Poitras, so that can’t be too bad.) – Maximillian Genius (UN Spacy uniform) from Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Or, “Max Sterling” from Robotech – We were all newbies once…)

I, of course, was there, in my signature cosplay as Black Jack, and picked up a couple of stalkers in the process. ^_^;

Next event may possibly be an afternoon/evening junket up at CostumeCon in San Jose (Need to gather info, develop a budget, and see how I feel after being in a walkathon earlier in the day.) After that, there’s Fanime to plan for. There is one new costume in development (Another pre-fab job of sorts, and it has props to boot – Daniel Plainfield from P.T. Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” – You can thank Victoria of Traveling Valentine for that idea, but I would have probably done it anyway – I did see the film, and “I Drink Your Milkshake!” really had an effect on me. – YES, I do have a giant straw – two of them, in fact.)
